We’re back into the thick of the Diamond League season, with the last two DL meets before the world championships set to take place this Friday and Sunday. If the last DL double-header felt a bit underwhelming, don’t despair — this weekend could very well end up being the best of the season, not just on the DL circuit but in track and field in general as well. Athletes are beginning to hit their peaks and this will for many present a last chance to get a fast time in before Worlds in Budapest this August.
LRC has done a good job summarizing this weekend’s action here. Though Monaco won’t be hosting its storied men’s 1500m this year, it could be the scene of the women’s mile world record as Faith Kipyegon, whose 1500m PB suggests she could take several seconds off the 4:12 WR mark, will be lining up with wavelights set to world-record pace. The best head-to-head matchup will be the men’s 400m hurdles, where all of the 2021 Olympic medalists are rounding into form at the right time and will be racing each other for the first time since that race. Two days later on Sunday, London will play host to a stacked 200m featured American record holder Noah Lyles, teen phenom Erriyon Knighton, and new 100m British record holder Zharnel Hughes.
Congrats to John Wesley Harding for taking the victory in the Silesia contest, extending his new overall league lead. With several big upsets including Fred Kerley’s first 100m loss of the season, now is the best time to be making predictions because the form charts are all but certain coming into the most impactful weeks of the year. Remember to get your picks in early, and good luck!
