This week’s Lausanne / Silesia double-header marked the beginning of the end-game of the 2024 Diamond League. With the Olympics in the books, athletes are extending their seasons to try for world records or coveted Diamond League final titles — now just three meetings away.
At least one of those world record attempts was successful today, with Jakob Ingebrigtsen taking down Daniel Komen’s legendary 7:20 3000m mark to erase his name from the record books 29 years later. The Fantasy DL competitions have been nearly as fierce, thanks to Lausanne winners McChamp, Carby, and Daniel, and Silesia podium-grabbers Donovan Drayton, AQ, and Jorge. You can check their scores here: hpr.github.io/2024/#/lausanne24/leaderboard and hpr.github.io/2024/#/silesia24/leaderboard. Next Friday in Rome, some athletes will have their last chance to rack up Diamond Race points before the final two meetings in Zurich and Brussels, and Fantasy DL points will be for the taking just as well.
All eyes will be on the women’s 1500m as Faith Kipyegon returns for the first time post-Olympic glory. Can she push the event into 3:48 territory, or will the Ethiopians Diribe Welteji or Birke Haylom take advantage should she falter? The 5000m features two men in Hagos Gebrhiwet and Yomif Kejelcha who have already scared the world record with sub-12:40 clockings earlier this year. Both were disappointed to leave Paris without a medal, but might one make up for it with a historically fast time? In the steeplechase, it’ll be American Val Constien’s first Diamond League since her fantastic 9:03 Trials victory. With the likes of Olympic champ Winfred Yavi to pace off of, can she achieve redemption following her 15th-place showing in Paris? And finally, how fast can Olympic 200m champ Letsile Tebogo go in the men’s 100m against former World champ Christian Coleman (coming back from relay disappointment and not making his national 100m squad) and almost-gold-medalist Kishane Thompson?
