Predict how Sha'Carri, Dos Santos will respond to their toughest challenges yet in Silesia

With the national championship weekend in the rear-view mirror, the Diamond League is back this Sunday as the nascent Silesia, Italy DL meet, originally introduced to replace the cancelled Chinese meetings last year, will return for the second time.

For a number of top performers, Silesia will present the biggest challenge of the year to date — and that starts with Sha’Carri Richardson, whose undefeated season record in the 100m will be threatened by reigning World 200m champion Shericka Jackson of Jamaica. Just a day after Sha’Carri ran a PB and world lead of 10.71 in Eugene on Thursday, Jackson responded with a 10.65 PB of her own at the Jamaican national championships, overtaking the world lead. Who will come out on top in Silesia?

Another race to watch will be the men’s 400m. Until a few days ago, last year’s 400mH world champion Alison dos Santos was expected by many to skip this entire season of competing following an injury sustained earlier in the year. But he’s back, and this race will represent the first true test of his fitness we’ve seen since 2022. He’ll be joined by another athlete on the comeback trail, 400m world record holder Wayde van Niekerk, as well as more current top performers like Muzala Samukonga.

Two weeks ago, the Lausanne and Stockholm Diamond Leagues both delivered, albeit with Stockholm performances degraded due to heavy rainfall. refusenick and Josh17 came away with the respective individual wins, but a fourth-place finish by John Wesley Harding in Stockholm vaulted him to the top of the overall league standings heading in to Silesia.
