The end of track in 2023 is near, with just one diamond league event to go before the finals in Eugene two weeks from now. That means this Friday in Brussels will be the last chance for athletes to secure coveted diamond league points to secure their spots in the finals, which unlike every other meeting of the year is purely qualification-based.
There’s no lack of action — there are a staggering ten track events set to take place in Brussels, which was once itself the site of the DL finals.
The headliner will be the men’s 2000m, where Jakob Ingebrigtsen and several others (including countryman Narvin Nordas who nearly beat Jakob at Worlds) will be attempting the world record. On its face, this might seem like a gimmick as the 2K is hardly ever run — until you realize that the record-holder is none other than the greatest miler of all time, Hicham El Guerrouj and his 4:44.79 will be tough to beat. The points for this event will count towards qualifying for the DL 1500 final as a similar-enough distance, so if Jakob runs away with it the rest of the field will still be motivated to chase 2nd place for qualifying points.
The women’s 200m with the second-fastest (or arguably first-fastest) performer of all time Shericka Jackson will be an interesting watch as well — you can expect an equally thrilling time trial in the women’s 400m hurdles where Femke Bol is also coming off a PB and second fastest of all time mark. And look out for competitive fields in the women’s 1500 (including phenom Addy Wiley fresh off a 1:57 800 PB) and men’s 800, which will be unpredictable without world champs Kipyegon and Arop.
Congrats to Zurich and Xiamen winners John Wesley Harding and first-time winner Nick Harris. John Wesley Harding still sits atop the leaderboard, but the more people that enter the fantasy DL, the more chances there will be to outplace him, bringing up the cumulative score. Remember to enter before the TV window starts by this Friday at 2pm ET.
