It’s been a year, and the 2024 Diamond League season opens in Xiamen, China just six days from now.

Last season was widely regarded as one of the greatest DL seasons in history, with seven world records being set at Diamond League meets, and the first Fantasy DL season followed suit with overall league winners John Wesley Harding, dmitlof1, and Will coop topping the final leaderboards: https://hpr.github.io/eugene23/#/standings

With big shoes to fill, this year the the Fantasy DL returns for a renewed season with some new features, but the core concept is the same: Pick a team of three for each track event. As insurance against non-starters, only your top two athletes per event are scored by place. The highest score for each DL meeting wins, and there will also be a league-wide scoring system for the best combined placing across all 15 meets. More detailed scoring info can be found by clicking the “Rules” button on the competition site. Remember to press “Save Picks” and log in / register (accounts from last year may be re-used) to submit your teams when you’re done.

In past years, Doha has reliably opened up the DL season, but this year two meets in China will kick things off, beginning with the second-ever Xiamen Diamond League in the new US$1.2 billion Egret Stadium, which boasts the only ten-lane 100m track on the circuit. One of those ten lanes will be occupied by ShaCarri Richardson in her season debut, and later we can expect an exciting men’s 5000m featuring world record holder Lamecha Girma making his debut (discounting last year’s DNF) at the distance (and also racing his brother Kuma Girma professionally for the first time).

Among the new technical enhancements to the website are a single unified site for all contests (at https://hpr.github.io/2024), more detailed athlete biographies including automated links to Wikipedia blurbs for each entrant, and a “smarter” TrackBot AI that can tell you the odds for each race. You can even click a link to edit the parameters and have TrackBot predict your own match races, subject to availability.
